Cannabinoids & ECS
All mammals have a system of receptors known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), a neural network of cell-level receptors that spans your central and peripheral nervous systems. Cannabinoid molecules act on these receptors to maintain vital functions throughout our body.
There are three types of cannabinoids:
-
Endogenous - our own body naturally produces cannabinoids; anandamide and 2-AG
-
Phyto-cannabinoids - plants-based cannabinoids. Most abundantly found in the hemp cannabis plant. Also found in cacao, black pepper, echinacea, liverwort, oxeye sunflower for example.
-
Synthetic - lab created cannabinoid
How do cannabinoids work in the body?
Two primary cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) are capable of:
-
receiving a message and,
-
produce a signal
When cannabinoids are produced by our body or consumed, these receptors are activated and capable of creating a physical and psychological reaction in the body.
